The former BORDERS bookstore now stands empty in the Park Place shopping center.
A NATOMAS BUZZ reader and former BORDERS employee wrote in that she went by the store yesterday to pick up her final check.
“The guys selling the shelving, etc. said that Goodwill architects had been in a couple of times this week to measure,” she writes.
THE BUZZ this afternoon confirmed via an e-mail from President/CEO Joseph R. Mendez that Goodwill Industries of Sacramento Valley & Northern Nevada is “currently in negotiations with the landlord for a 15,000 square-foot store at that location.”
Thanks, J.W. for the tip!
Goodwill Industries does a great service to the communities in which they are located. In general I applaud their efforts.
That being said, some months ago I visited their store on Arden Way while waiting for my car at America’s Tire Co., and I must say, it was just gross. So little of the merchandise was worth looking at, let alone actually touching. Shelves were dirty and items were strewn around on the floor in the aisles.
Maybe if they do move in they will take the opportunity to outfit a nice store from a clean slate with some quality second-hand merchandise. However, at best I’m skeptical about that.
The property management company would be wise to visit their Arden Way store to measure this tenant’s (in)ability to maintain a desirable shopping experience — they owe that to their remaining commercial tenants, let alone their patrons.
This has the potential of being a huge step down for Natomas.
Just when I thought having a Ross was a bad idea…now this. This is a monumentally bad idea. I feel sorry for the retail stores and restaurants already there. I highly doubt Jack’s Urban Eats wanted to plant its franchise next to a Goodwill store.
I really hope Goodwill does not lease that location. I would rather have an open lot than a Goodwill. It will lower local property value and attract crime. Whats next, check cashing and bail bonds?
It is too bad the economy sucks so bad, we are now seeing the results of communities changing, and less desirable retail invades. What ever the spin is, the property values will suffer. I am sure Ray T. will love the idea, it will help many of his voters.
Gosh, I hope not. Say it isn’t so.
I’m starting to feel jinxed here people. Seems like no matter our efforts, the tides are turning against us.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about putting a stop to this before it is a done deal. Anyone remember Hooters?
Trixie
If a goodwill store moves into that location it WILL cause a higher crime rate in and around that shopping complex…. If this goes through I will most likely not be shopping or eating at businesses in that complex for fear of being mugged on my way in!!!
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
That’s all that was needed to be said on my end.
I can not believe the property manager would consider leasing to Goodwill. Has Mr Mendez been to a Goodwill? Has he seen what happens in and near their thrift stores? I would rather the building stay vacant than allow an opportunity for vagerancy, increase crime, vandalisim, and the appearance of a trashy neighborhood. If Goodwill moves into the neighborhood it is only a matter of time before our neighborhood resembles Northgate and Del Paso Boulevards!
How can we stop this? Can we petition? Encourage another type of business to occupy? Who do we write/call.
We can’t let this happen! Tell your neighbors, people you see in the grocery store, anywhere. Let them know what is going to happen to their neighborhood if they do nothing!
Seriously, of all the things it could be a Goodwill?
I’m sorry they are overprice and sell crap. This coming from someone who likes going to Thrift stores but this one is one I do not visit. WHY? For the simple fact they sell crap, I agree with the comment that the Arden location is dirty, I’ve been in there and didn’t want to touch a thing. Not good news.
It is all making sense to me now. Think about it people. The city has already put a ton of low-income apartments in place throughout North Natomas to patronize the potential Goodwill store and so this shouldn’t be a surprise. What a joke this portion of Sacramento is becoming. I feel bad for places like ‘Children’s Place’ and ‘Jack’s’. Why not put a Loaves and Fishes in while you’re at it? Yet another thing to anger me as I write a check for my property taxes.
I have been to the goodwill store in Roseville and I have to agree that it brings a less than desirable presence to the area. Number one, the stores are often staffed by people who, as a part of a program, they are required to put in time there, WITHOUT PAY. That has a clear impact on their motivation to keep the store nice.
The merchandise is dumped all over shelves, it is dirty, sometimes not working at all, I am definately not above shopping 2nd hand, but the way the stores are kept can feel like digging through a trash can sometimes…seriously bring hand sanitizer.
The store in Roseville always has overflowing trash cans in front and panhandlers standing outside, is the shopping center itself ready for the extra manpower that might be required to keep up the center?
I would like to know who we can call to let them know this is not something the community is interested in having? If anyone knows, please post.
Please Buzz, look into who we can contact regarding this. The landlord should be thinking long term, not short term cash in hand!
I thought the point of inclusionary/low income housing was to create a seamless, mixed income community where people could influence each other to create a higher standard of living, seems like we are moving in the wrong direction. Having all of this inclusionary housing is suppossed to encourage people to move up in the Natomas community, not encourage the community to move down???
The developer is Retail Pacific based in the bay area. 1 (888) 292-0282. Sales agents are Carol Therien and Amy Schenk. Call and let them know better options.
I am so excited that Goodwill Industries is considering a store in my neighborhood. Their recent renovation of their store on Arden Way is very attractive, organized, and really impressed me when I saw it a few weeks ago. I also visited their Folsom store a while ago and was really impressed by their operation and how clean and orderly the store was. Goodwill does such a tremendous service for the community with the jobs they provide to people who may otherwise not be afforded the opportunity to work. They also offer low cost goods to the community and provide an opportunity for people to donate household items that are no longer needed, instead of them filling up a landfill. I donate to Goodwill regularly and would welcome a store in my neighborhood.
I am not surprised at all. North Natomas is home to thousands of low income individuals and families and more are on the way. These folks NEED places like Goodwill–not prefer, but NEED. As it stands there is nowhere for them to even buy groceries cheap unless they have transportation to Dollar Store land across I-80.
Quite frankly I find it appalling the city built all of this low income housing in N Natomas and didn’t work hard to get tenants/resources here to support them.
Instead of decrying these kinds of retail tenants, perhaps we should be pleading for them, because they will undoubtedly ease the cost of living burden for all of our low income neighbors–which arguably could result in LESS crime, not more.
The city has a goal for there to be 15% low income housing in N Natomas. It’s irrational to expect these folks to shop at Raley’s and eat at Jack’s. Socio-economically diverse areas demand economically diverse retailers. That’s just reality..and the reality of living in N Natomas.
Bottom line if you don’t like low income and Goodwill stores, North Natomas is definitely not for you.
You people are all wrong! I work in the non-profit community. Goodwill stores DO NOT increase crime. They DO provide jobs…and lots of them. Their stores are bright, clean and offer great value during a time when we need jobs and value.
I agree with Anonymous 9:45am. We need to get a hold of the owner and let them know in no uncertain terms that this is a BAD move. I’m not a big fan of slippery slope arguments, but if it goes in a lot of the other stores will most likely either leave or go out of business.
I don’t think we’re asking for a Nordstrom here (though Trixie probably is…) but there HAS to be something better than a Goodwill.
Johnonymous
Ok, I can’t let this go. I am getting angrier the longer I visual this.
I am thinking about going to the other Goodwill locations on Saturday and take pictures inside and out of their facilities. Create a flyer with the images and a simple “Not in my neighborhood” type slogan along with Mr. Mendez e-mail and phone number. Walk the neighborhood and hand out the fly er to residents and ask them to sign a petition and/or call Mr. Mendez to stop this action.
What do you think? Anyone want to join me this Sunday, rain or shine?

We cannot let this happen! Who do we contact? What do we do?
I’ll bet Mr. Mendez has visited plenty of Goodwill stores since he’s the President and CEO! I think Goodwill will make a fine addition to our community and give us an opportunity to grab some good deals. I wish we could get a Big Lots here too.
I recently bought a home in Natomas Park within walking distance from the shopping center. This is an outrage, to say the least. I hope that Natomas residents will become active in putting a stop to this. Who else is willing to speak up? And who do we begin to contact? Tretheway, KJ?
“Bottom line if you don’t like low income and Goodwill stores, North Natomas is definitely not for you.”
I really wish they would have posted that on a Billboard at the Del Paso Blvd. exit when I bought here 7 years ago. You’re probably correct in stating that’s the way it is now, but that’s not how it was sold to us when it was all being built.
The plan may have originally been for 15% low-income housing, but it sure seems like a lot more. And as we all know, the plan for North Natomas got thrown out the window a long time ago.
This isn’t about picking on low-income folks, this is about preserving a quality of life for those of us that have bought property, planted roots and are raising families here. Call it snobbish, but if you insist on “equality” by way of lowering standards, pretty soon you end up with a culture of low expectations.
I don’t speak for anyone else, but I certainly expected more than that when I moved here.
John
To bad something that was more family oriented wasn’t slated to move into that location. Lots of families miss having Funtastic open and hate driving to West Sac for the Bounce Spot. I don’t know if retail is the only thing allowed in that spot, but it would be nice to have an “indoor playground” for those hot or rainy days!
I’m really shocked by the blatant ignorance and intolerance of some of these posts. I know that it does not require a great deal of intelligence to form an opinion, and sadly prejudice is still rampant in our society, but I invite people to at least attempt to educate themselves prior to anonymously slamming an non-profit charitable organization that exists solely to benefit the community (that’s you and me) and will be there to benefit each and all of us if we are ever in need.
Those of you who stand in judgment, I invite you to get into your cars and go visit the newly remodeled Arden Store, visit the Norwood store, visit Roseville, Folsom, or any of their other stores that you so choose; I have. Drive by their upcoming store at Five Star and Fairway in Roseville. And while you are on your way out to visit the Goodwill stores, please look through your closets and BRING SOME DONATIONS. They need your donations in order to help provide people with jobs and job training. Quite possibly people who have been displaced by the widespread retail store closures, SUCH AS BORDERS, Linens & Things, Circuit City, Mervyns, to name just a few. People in this community and nationwide are losing their jobs left and right; perhaps you know some of them. Goodwill is providing jobs. Please think about that and take a look at their operation with an open heart and an open mind. In these difficult economic times, our community needs that.
I’m sure a Goodwill will affect the dollars flowing to the other tenants. And I would imagine tenants would begin to locate elsewhere as those Goodwill shoppers bypass the existing stores and restaurants. In their place will come the Dollar Stores and check cashing stores that some of you think we need to support the 15%.
I can’t say that I have ever seen a well kept exterior of a thrift store, where people dump their unwanted junk at all hours of the day and night. I would also imagine that people would visit the midnight donation drop off to look for treasures. If they don’t find treasure there, who knows where they will look. This is just asking for trouble.
Goodwill is a short term solution that will have long term negative effects.
Erik
Trixie would at least like a Nordstrom Rack! How about Toy’s R Us? Trader Joe’s?
Trixie
They should make it into not one but possibly two or three separate stores.. Borders was a big store… why throw something in to take up the space .. the center owners should invest in making it multiple stores.
If it’s imperative to have a Goodwill Store in our area (and believe me, I’d love nothing more than to not have to drive all the way to Arden to donate), it’s still a bad idea to put it in that particular shopping center. Commercial property owners are always talking about “continuity” among their tenants, and this proposed placement is about as incongruous as it gets. I would think it would fit far better in one of the empty commercial spaces further east on Del Paso. Lord knows there’s plenty of space there to be had.
I agree with Trixie. How about Trader Joe’s? Great, healthy food products at good prices.
I’m speaking as a Senior from Inderkum HS and I walk home. I will fear walking home if a goodwill opens up. Also I agree we should SHUT DOWN RALEYS AND ADD A TRADER JOES

Face it, Natomas is done. Its just straight ghetto now. Get out if you can. Rent a place in Roseville and just mail your keys back to the banks. Property values won’t EVER recover. I’m glad I moved a year ago.
What can we do to stop this from happening? Can we boycot the other stores in the shopping center – so that they put pressure on their landlord? Who do we write? Is this a done deal?
Thats great advice from anonymous at 5:22PM however; you forgot to mention the fact that there is a Goodwill store in operation on Douglas Blvd. and opening soon is yet another Goodwill store in Roseville on Fairway at Five Star. The Douglas Blvd.store is a plesent suprise and the Fariway Dr. location is down right beautiful. My research indicates that the average household income in the Roseville Community is aproximately 25% higher, and the property value 20% higher than the N Natomas Area. There have been no reports of crime involving the Goodwill stores in Roseville nor has the crime rate increased due to Goodwill’s presence in the community. Goodwill does provide much need jobs, tax revenue and other useful services to our society. It seems absurd that anyone wouldn’t welcome a company that can do so much good for the community, and even more absurd that some people would go to such lenghts to perserve the illusion of your so called “quality of life” at the expence of thousands of people that would benefit from the services that Goodwill provides. Its a shamefull and seraratist point of view. All I ask is that we open our minds and be considerate of others.
There is no need for a boycott. Noone is going to shop in those surrounding stores anyway. A store the size of Goodwill will command that entire side of the center and the rest of the stores will have to serve the same clientele or they won’t survive. Next up, check cashing and the dollar store. My wife and I have worked hard to try and support Natomas, but low income complex after low income complex and now ghetto shopping centers. I’m not so sure it’s worth it anymore. Time to get out.
Seriously people! When did you become holyer than thou? Come on now….Natomas is as ghetto as the rest of Sac. Crime exists now and will be there if Goodwill does or doesn’t move in. It’s a shame it takes this to get people involved in their community! Maybe if you would have supported Borders, you wouldn’t be facing having Goodwill come in. AND what about our economy? Goodwill would be vital in bringing in jobs for the community! It’s not always about YOU!
I have never seen so many closed minded people in my life. If Natomas Park is so wonderful and wealthy why are most of the homes for sale forclosures???????Looks like the richy rich had to go somewhere cheaper, and “low-income-ish” and become RENTERS(OMG)while they walked away from homes they can no longer afford. All of you Goodwill haters need to sneak up on a mirror and realize you just may need that store when your kids need a winter coat. Low income does not mean bad, everyone deserves a decent place to live. Natomas Prk is no Beverley Hills. Get over it. Give Goodwill a chance, heck, everyone else there has closed thier doors…..businesses come and go in that shopping center all the time. There is more drug deals going on at the high school across the street-if you are so worried about your kids-check your medicine cabinets, not the Goodwill store…….
I’m really not sure I understand why comments here continue to be that people should just be happy and quit whining. Is it not okay to hope for something better?
Goodwill doesn’t bring in jobs for everyone, it brings in jobs for a very specific clientele.
I talked to a local real estate broker and several real estate folks yesterday. They are certain they will see a decline in their jobs because housing prices will drop yet again.
As for moving to Roseville, we bought our house 10 years ago because of a community plan. I think it’s about time we forced the city to comply with that plan. Why is everyone content to comment here but not get on the phone or send an email? Just a few of us are screaming and it’s falling on deaf ears.
Well I certainly hope that Raley’s and the other stores can survive on that 15% from the low income housing. This is taking a very nice shopping center and turning it into a trashy area. Yes I am sure Goodwill will open a very nice store but over time it will become what they all are. I believe for the first time I am considering leaving North Natomas. And short of leaving, I will be looking for a new place to shop.
It is sad that many people do not see the this from a positive perspective. During the economic crises, rather than embracing something that will do the community some good in revenue and just might actually teach some citizens the value of thrift shopping people are worried about what kind of shoppers it would attract?! Talk about being pretentious. I’ve lived in the Bay Area for a few years before here and the shops in the Bay are just fine.
I can’t believe the pretentious people in this community. In the midst of the economic crises, when something comes along that can teach us the value of thrift shopping for once in our lives, we denounce it. As for the kind of “customers” it might attract, i grew up in this area and attended college in san francisco for years and i assure you it would not pose a danger to the community. the goodwills in the city were fine and im sure if those are working alright, the one here placed in suburbville would also.
Anon at 8:23am- can you site some statistics other than assurance? You won’t even post your name… I don’t live in San Francisco. Goodwill wasn’t in my community plan when I bought my house. The shopping center I live by was supposed to be upscale, walkable and mixed-use.
I’m concerned about the added traffic on two already busy streets. Not only will Goodwill increase the retail traffic but also the donation traffic. Natomas Blvd is busy enough and barely safe for the high school kids that have to walk there. Now we’ll have added traffic there and on to North Bend. I’d like to see a traffic impact study done by the city before they go ahead with permits.
The landlord made a big mistake not working with Borders. Has anyone talked to the local folks in the center? How does Jacks, Dinner My Way, Strings, Cool Cuts etc. feel about it? These are locally owned stores that can’t be very excited about the change in their traffic or clientele.
Come on people… Natomas is not ghetto. I happen to like the community we live in. Does anyone have anything positive to say about Natomas? There are a lot worse places to live people, open your eyes. As far as goodwill coming in… I don’t think that location is a good fit for that type of a store. There is so much negativity on this board, I can’t believe it. Face it, all of Sacramento is a huge basin and flood plain. You people who badmouth Natomas residents disgust me. Do you really think Roseville is that much better?
why not put this store at the site of where Linen N Things used to be! That would be an ideal location for it!
this is AWFUL; I’m so glad I moved out of natomas park
I love Natomas Park. Best place I ever lived. Now let’s get rid of the baggage people (all those negative commenters) and we will be so much for the better. Remember that blog a long time ago about how great Natomas is? Every time you go to the store, you see at least 3 people you know? Maybe you did move to Roseville and are missing the community feel you get here. Jealous?
this is humorous. crime? dirty stores? why not question the ethics of goodwill. joe mendez makes $200,000 a year and pays the majority of his employees minimum wage with no hopes of a wage increase no matter how hard they work. managers make a whopping $16 bucks an hour. the developementally disabled employees that goodwill is supposed to help make less than minimum wage. all of this by selling goods that the people generously donate and don’t cost goodwill a dime.
Instead of Goodwill I’d love to see something put there for the kids to do. There are no Chuck E Cheeses or John’s Incredibles around our area. =) Or just about any family fun center would be nice. Maybe an indoor arcade a place to have birthday parties with a rock climbing wall. Just some ideas.
I sincerely hope that this does not happen. Although the Goodwill does do some good work, the clientele they attract is questionable. If this happens, that shopping center will degenerate into a dirty, ghetto area which will affect the other businesses nearby.
This is a BAD idea all around.
