Would You Like A Farmer’s Market In Natomas?

By Ray Tretheway

Councilmember, District 1

In the last several years Certified Farmers’ Markets have grown in popularity throughout Sacramento. Today, there are more than 4,600 farmers markets operating throughout the nation, and every year this number continues to grow.

Certified Farmers’ Markets successfully reestablish the traditional direct link between farmers and customers. We in the community benefit because we can purchase high quality produce directly, and farmers are able to provide field and tree ripened fruits and vegetables which are often too delicate for the packing and shipping processes of traditional food distribution systems.

Many people have asked me about bringing a farmers’ market to Natomas. I believe a regularly scheduled certified Farmers’ Market would be a new, valuable asset for the entire community.

In order to proceed I have been asked what time and day of the week would be the most successful for the market. I have created a survey to gather information on your thoughts on a market as well as to find out when would be the most optimal time and day to have the market.

I hope that you will take a few moments to fill out the survey and we will be on our way to securing a farmers’ market. (Click here to take survey.)

In the meantime, I hope you will take advantage of many of the farmers’ markets that are currently taking place in Sacramento neighborhoods. Visit the Certified Farmers’ Market website here.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 808-7001 or e-mail me.

We need a real farmers market. Not in a parking lot, but like the one in Davis. Lewis was looking for ideas to build phase II of Towne Center. Well this would be a winner.

  2. It’s really strange that Natomas doesn’t already have a full-fledged farmer’s market like the one at Chavez Park. There are lots of places to do it: Natomas High School, South Natomas Community Center, or North Natomas Community Park.

Great idea! I hope this becomes a reality.

Thanks for your comments and please do take the survey and ask neighbors, friends and colleagues to do so as well. About three summers ago a Farmer’s Market was located at Natomas High School in the early afternoon – evening but the attendance and farmer’s schedules did not create the results that would sustain a market. Together, the City & the CFM are looking to establish a full market with input from you – the shoppers. Thanks! Randi Kay 808-7001

Sure, but can we also have some more police officers and a firestation for the other half of our community?
