A domestic violence suspect died Wednesday afternoon after struggling with police.
At about 6 p.m., Sac PD officers responded to a residence near Harding and American Avenue on a domestic violence call
When officers arrived to the scene, they met the female victim outside of the residence who said she recently separated from the suspect. Officers confirmed the victim previously obtained a restraining order against the suspect.
The victim reportedly called police after the suspect kicked in the door to the residence and began punching her several times. At one point during the attack, the suspect is said to have passed out on the floor, possibly under the influence of narcotics. The victim and her 6-year-old son fled the house to call the police.
After speaking with the victim, officers went into the residence and contacted the suspect who appeared to be passed out and lying on the floor. The suspect suddenly woke and began fighting with officers.
While the officers were struggling with the suspect they realized he had stopped breathing and immediately began CPR. The Sac Fire responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital where the he later died.
The cause of death is not known at this tie. Sac PD reports no lethal or less-than-lethal weapons were utilized by law enforcement personnel during the struggle. The incident is under investigation.
