Inderkum Offers Weekly Tours, Shadow Days
Inderkum High School now offers weekly campus tours and shadow days for prospective students.
“This is a way for students to get a feel for Inderkum High School,” said George Tapanes, school principal. Tours are being offered every Thursday.
Tapanes decided to offer the tours and shadow days after receiving visit requests from parents of prospective Inderkum High students. The visits are meant to give students and their parents a feel for the school culture and academic programs.
Prospective students visiting the campus are paired with one of the school’s leadership students. Parents are invited to tag along during a tour of school facilities after which the prospective student may stay on campus, have lunch and attend classes with their guide.
To sign up for a tour or to find out more about visiting Inderkum High School, call the main office at (916) 567-5640. Visiting students must be transported to and from the high school by a parent or guardian.
More Natomas High Kids Take AP Tests
There may be fewer students at Natomas High School this year, but more are taking Advanced Placement tests.
“For the first time in school history, we will proctor over 200 exams,” said principal John Eick.
Eick recently finished collecting applications for this year’s tests. While there are 200 fewer students attending Natomas High compared to 2008, Eick reports the number of Advanced Placement tests students plan to take have doubled in four year’s time.
Students who take the tests are eligible for college credit depending on the scores they earn.
Eick said Natomas High School is also celebrating its students who have already been accepted to attend college later this year. Students have been accepted to:

“We are anxiously awaiting a letter from Stanford and another from Brown,” said Eick.
Temporary HR Superintendent Hired The Natomas Unified School district has tapped a retired educator to oversee its human resource department.
David G. Pope comes to the part-time, temporary post with more than 35 years of experience. Pope headed the human resources department in Rocklin Unified for nine years before retiring in 2009. He also worked as a middle school principal and vice principal in Rocklin and as a teacher, coach and mentor teacher in the Grant Joint Union School District.
“Dave came highly recommended from the Association of California School Administrators and several educators in Sacramento County to serve as an interim administrator responsible for human resources,” Natomas Unified superintendent Bobbie Plough said. “He will provide guidance and support to our human resources departement and assistance in all personnel matters concerning employees.”
To maintain continuity in contract negotiations with employee unions, Plough said she will continue to lead the school district’s negotiations team. Pope will work two to three days per week through the end of June.
The school district’s previous assistant superintendent of human resources Ken Whittemore resigned in December to take a position elsewhere. Whittemore worked for the district from 2005 to 2010.
