The Natomas High School Nighthawks football couldn’t overcome a night of missteps as they fell to the Center High School Cougars last night at home.
Things looked positive for the Nighthawks (0-3) early as their defense held the Cougars on fourth down deep in the red zone. The Cougars (2-1) bounced back later, however, by returning a punt to the end zone.
The Nighthawks then tied the game midway through the second quarter following an overthrown snap by the Cougars. Later in the second quarter, the Cougars scored on their two-point conversion. The Nighthawks struggled the rest of the half with penalties and an interception.
Center increased its lead 21-6 following the first drive of the third quarter. The Cougars scored again, increasing their lead to 28-6 at the end of the third.
The Nighthawks made a final push to decrease the Cougars’ lead to 28-12 in the fourth quarter with 6:52 remaining. Natomas High was unable to convert an onside kick, but scored again with 1:18 remaining – the team was unable to convert any of their two-point conversions.
Final score: 28-18.
