Students at Merryhill Millcreek this month collected several bins of used books to donate to the Salvation Army’s Early Care and Education Program in Oak Park.

The Salvation Army is scheduled to send a van to pick up the books tomorrow morning, Feb. 24. Some of the students will follow, help unload and organize the library, then read to the preschoolers.

The goal of the book drive: building the program’s lending library and classroom library. The books will be made available for children to check out and take home, as well as build a library for program classrooms – both for the free reading time for children and for teachers to use in the curriculum.

Currently, there are about 48 preschool-age children in the program with plans to expand to 72 by summer. A lack of good books has been identified as the program works to strengthen its focus on early literacy.
