Inderkum didn’t take long to get started this season.

The Tigers scored early and often, beating Clovis East 45-8 in front of the home crowd to start the 2012 season on Friday night.

On the first play from scrimmage, senior running back Josh Montes ran 81 yards for a touchdown. However, it was called back on a penalty.

But just four plays later, fellow senior running back Eric Walters rushed 74 yards for a touchdown, giving the Tigers a quick 7-0 lead.

“After that play, it showed how much work we have put in,” Walters said. “Our offensive line has worked hard and did what they were supposed to do. Everything just fell into place.”

Humble words for someone who scored four times before halftime and accounted for 161 on just the three rushing touchdowns.

“We came out with a bang,” Walters said. “Not just me, but our offensive and defense worked together all summer and everything came out as planned.”

Walters scored again in the first quarter, this time on a 22-yard run, then showed off his catching abilities with a short goal line catch from CJ Spiller and Inderkum opened up an early three-score lead (21-0) with 8:43 left in the second quarter.

Walters continued his career night with a third scoring run and a 65-yard scamper past the Timberwolves defense, giving the Tigers a 28-0 lead at the half. The senior scored four total touchdowns in the first half before giving way to the backups in the second half.

The defense continually gave the Timberwolves fits all night, as All-Metro preseason first-teamer Dedric Allen accounted for three sacks in the first half.

“We are just trying to get back to playing great defense,” Tigers head coach Terry Stark said. “About three or four years we played great defense, then the last couple of years we played well enough to win our league, but it wasn’t dominate. This was a good first start.”

The defense also held strong late in the first half after the offense fumbled the ball on the 15-yard line, giving Clovis East the first, and only, red zone opportunity with less than two minutes in the half.

“That was a big momentum change,” Allen said. “At that point, we really didn’t know the outcome of the game.”

Inderkum will host Spanish Springs on Sept. 7 after an early season bye week next week.

“It was a scheduling problem and just fell that way,” Stark said. “Time to just have two good weeks of practice.”
