Ask Capt. Maccoun: Shootings in So. Natomas?

THE NATOMAS BUZZ | @natomasbuzz

“Thank you for being available for questions in this public forum. Our family and neighbors appreciate the Sac PD and know that the force works hard in spite of difficult budget cuts. I live in the neighborhood immediately southeast of Truxel and San Juan. In the last three weeks there have been FIVE shootings within a few hundred yards of here, two in which injuries were sustained. (Three of these incidents I’ve seen posted on the log here on the Buzz and two others I’ve personally reported). This is a major spike. I’ve seen the portable camera rig at the corner of Miramonte and San Juan, but what else is being done? Are these incidents connected? Please share any information you can. This neighborhood is on high alert. We have hundreds of kids walking through daily between homes and Jefferson, Bannon Creek, and Natomas High.”

Capt. Maccoun answers:

“Indeed there has been a spike in shooting incidents within a 1/2-mile radius of San Juan and Truxel between Sept. 1 and Sept. 8. Two individuals were struck and received minor wounds in two of those incidents. We are not getting a lot of assistance from the parties closest to these events and have found little to link the events other than the physical location.”

“Our investigations are continuing and we are focusing on a nearby rental property which has tenants who may be involved in illicit activity. We have noticed the property owner and requested that they consider an eviction. Officers have made searches on a number of probationers, made extra patrols, the CCTV trailer has been posted, and marked units have been parked in the area as a visibility effort.”

“SPD would appreciate any information the community may have and we will continue to be active in the area by checking probationers and parolees with gang and drug dealing history.”

Capt. James Maccoun oversees the Sacramento Police Dept.’s north-area command, which includes Natomas. To submit your questions to Capt. Maccoun, send an email to [email protected] with “Ask Capt. Maccoun” in the subject line.
