Only a coach with high expectations would be critical of his team’s 20-point win in November.

That was Inderkum High School boys basketball head coach Rodney Haymer Saturday night despite a 69-49 victory over Fremont’s Kennedy High School in the opening Sac vs. Bay Challenge game at Grant High.

“I am a little disappointed with some of the mistakes we made and some of the turnovers,” Haymer said. “A coach is never happy about that.”

But there was still a lot to be happy about with a team which headed into halftime up by 30 points.

“Overall our intensity was there,” Haymer said.

The Tigers (2-0) defended well, ran the court and pressed Kennedy all night.

Another bright spot for the Tigers was the effort put in by 6-foot, 7-inch center Samir Dhillon and 6-foot, 5-inch forward Evan Carr—both of whom scored 11 points.

“Whenever we can get our ‘bigs’ involved and play inside-outside basketball, it is always a plus for us,” Haymer said.

Quentin Davis led the Tigers with 14 points, all in the first half, giving Haymer the feeling there are great things to come this season for his senior guard.

“He actually played a great game,” Haymer said. “The difference for Quentin from this year and last year is he is not turning the ball over as much and he is not playing as sporadically. He has grown as a basketball player.”

Davis spoke to the team’s progression from the 10-15 squad from last year.

“I think it was a good win,” Davis said of the game against Kennedy. “We weren’t as successful last year, so to continue to continue getting wins and to continue to get wins like this is good for us.”

Davis, Dhillon and Carr were the three Tigers to score in double figures, leading 11 Tigers to score in the non-league game against a Bay Area for.

“Whenever we get the chance, we like to beat the Bay Area,” Dhillon said.

The Tigers will play River City High at home Tuesday, Dec. 4 night before hitting the road. The next home game will be against Bear River on Jan. 5.

Girl’s Basketball:
The Inderkum girls basketball team defeated Franklin 58-57 in the consolation game in the Bill Cartwright Classic earlier in the day at Elk Grove High. The Tigers (2-2) won the last two games of the tournament after losing to Florin on Thursday afternoon.
