EL DORADO HILLS – Keyed by a clutch steal by Corianna Yerger with just three seconds left in the game, the Inderkum girls basketball team defeated Will C. Wood 50-47 in the second round of the Trojan Toss-Up at Oak Ridge High School on Friday evening.
The Tigers (5-5) will play Clovis in the consolation round championship at 5:15 p.m. today, Dec. 15 after falling to River City 60-43 in the first round on Thursday.
Leading by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, the Tigers lead slipped to just four points with senior leader Sakara Brewer on the bench in foul trouble. But led by a double-double performance by Anthina McCaskel (12 points, 11 rebounds) off the bench, the Tigers withheld a comeback from Wood to get back to a .500 record.
“It was important because with (McCaskel) coming off the bench, it was a major boost for us,” Inderkum head coach Phillip Hampton said.
Brewer finished with 10 points despite foul trouble and the illness as three more Tigers scored at least six points in the game.
Shymir Mitschan-Baldwin scored seven points despite missing most of the fourth quarter after getting hit on her head. Yerger scored six points and Kyliyah Daniel scored six points and grabbed a 10 rebounds.
“To get a win like this is a good builder for us,” Hampton said. “It could get us in the right direction.”
Boys win in thriller – Led by 23 points from Terrence White and 12 from Quentin Davis, the Inderkum boys basketball team beat Weston Ranch of Reno 80-79 in the second game of the Rocklin Holiday Tournament on Friday.
The Tigers (4-2) will play Whitney at 2 p.m. in the final of three games in the round-robin tournament on Saturday.
