A Natomas man has been charged by a federal grand jury several felonies including possession of stolen mail and identity theft.
United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Tony Nhiachong Khang, 28, of Natomas was charged by a federal grand jury with felon in possession of ammunition, bank fraud, aggravated identification theft, access device fraud, possession of stolen U.S. Mail, possession for fraudulent use of identification documents of others, and possession of stolen postal service keys.
“Postal Inspectors working with our partners in Law Enforcement will continue conducting these investigations in order to protect the public, our employees, and the mail from this type of criminal attack,” said Rafael Nunez, Acting Inspector in Charge of the United States Postal Inspection Service, San Francisco Division.
Reports of mailbox breakins have been on the rise in Sacramento County since December. In Natomas some cluster mailboxes have been broken into multiple times.
According to court documents, this investigation arose after the United States Postal Inspection Service received numerous reports of U.S. Mail letter box break-ins in the Sacramento County area. On April 18 Khang’s residence in Natomas was searched pursuant to a federal warrant. According to court documents, Khang was found to possess ammunition, stolen U.S. Mail, stolen credit card and bank account access numbers, and a number of identification documents of others. Having been previously convicted of felony burglary and vehicle theft, Khang was a person prohibited from possessing ammunition.
Khang’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Sacramento Police Department. He faces up to 10 years for the felon in possession of ammunition charge, 30 years for bank fraud, 10 years for access device fraud, 20 years for possession of identification cards of others, five years for possession of stolen U.S. Mail, and 10 years for possession of U.S. Mail letter box keys. Khang also faces 2 years consecutive imprisonment for aggravated identity theft in connection to his bank fraud offenses.
Khang is scheduled to be arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Carolyn K. Delaney on Monday.
