Inderkum High School football did all it could do to keep it close, but the Tigers lost to Pleasant Grove High School 33-19 Friday night.
CJ Spencer passed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a 163-yard receiving night from Khalil Hudson. But the Eagles’ size and run game were too much for the Tigers.
Led by Demaree Morris (136 yards, one touchdown), Brandon Lewis (96 yards, one TD) and quarterback Dre Terrell (71 yards, one TD), Pleasant Grove controlled the clock most of the game at Sheldon-Pleasant Grove Community Stadium in Sacramento.
Down 14-0 in the first quarter, Spencer found Hudson for a 44-yard pass that set up a 16-yard Austin Thurman touchdown to make it 14-6.
Inderkum (3-1) rallied back on a three-yard touchdown pass from Spencer to Larry Hardy to get the Tigers within two points at 14-12 in the second quarter.
Pleasant Grove (4-0) responded quickly with a 28-yard touchdown run by Morris to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.
The play of the game for Inderkum came in the third quarter. With a third-and-eight on their own 30-yard line, Spencer escaped two tackles behind the line of scrimmage, stepped off his back leg and completed the pass to a wide open Hudson.
From there the senior wide receiver broke tackles, juked a Pleasant Grove defender and scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass to get the Tigers to a 21-19 deficit with 6 minutes, 49 second left in the third quarter.
Inderkum had two more opportunities to score in the fourth quarter, but fell short on a fourth down conversion and Wyatt Demps intercepted a Spencer pass at the two-yard line.
Lewis scored the final touchdown for Pleasant Grove as time expired.
Terrence White led Inderkum with 123 yards rushing on 14 carries.
The Tigers host Rocklin next Friday, Sept. 27 in the final non-league game before opening Tri-County Conference action at Yuba City Oct. 11.
