The Inderkum Tigers defeated the Vanden Vikings 62-42 as they continued their quest for a Sac-Joaquin Section championship.
The Tigers were once again fueled by big defensive plays as senior safety Larry Hardy had a 54-yard fumble return for a touchdown and then followed that up with a pick six to put the Tigers up 21-7 at the half.
Though they trailed by two touchdowns at half, the Vikings did not go down without a fight. A fourth quarter push by the Vikings cut the lead to 34-48, but the Tigers offense scored two more touchdowns to put the game away for good.
For the Tiger seniors it was business as usual, the group has only lost 5 games in the four years they have played together.
Coach Terry Stark was asked about the late run by the Vikings and what his team did to hold them off.
“We gave them hope when we shouldn’t have,” said Stark. “We had to keep moving the ball on offense, chew up the clock and score touchdowns, so that was our answer for that.”
The Tigers are now in unfamiliar territory as they will play their next playoff game on the road. Stark talked about the challenges that comes with playing in enemy territory.
“When you play a team like Manteca, the whole town shuts down; everyone is going to be there,” said Stark. “Were not only playing against them, but were playing against the 12th man.”
Coach Stark also touched on what his team would have to do to put themselves in a position to win the game saying, “We have to go up there, play through adversity and keep playing hard all game long.”
The Tigers will travel to Manteca next Friday where they will face off against the Manteca High Buffaloes. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
