Natomas celebrated Diwali over the weekend with lamps, lights and food.
Diwali or the “Festival of Lights” is celebrated worldwide by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. It occurs during the period of October to November and marks the beginning of the fiscal year in India.
These photos were taken in south Natomas where homes and entryways are decorated with traditional “rangolis,” Indian folk art, featuring clay lamps and candles to welcome the goddess of prosperity Lakshmi into a household. The decorative designs are made with colored rice, dry flour, colored sand and sometime flower petals.
Many families also hold prayers for the goddess Lakshmi, however, there are many forms in which Diwali is celebrated, each unique to a family.
