The Natomas High School digital photography classroom was recently outfitted with new Windows 7 computers.
The 30 new computer systems are used by students every period of the school day, including lunch, before and after school.
“It’s cool, they’re updated and more efficient,” said student Kyaira D-Waton. “Less crashes, plus they don’t go into deep freeze anymore.”
The computers replace systems that had often “froze,” losing data and frustrating students.
The $15,000+ upgrade was paid for in part by a donor who wished to remain anonymous, according to John Eick, director of instructional technology for the Natomas Unified School District.
“The donor wanted technology in the hands of students,” said Eick. “We analyzed the needs of the entire district, looking at the age of the computer labs from elementary, middle and high school to determine where these computers would be placed.”
The new computers also include Lightroom 5.3. The older computers lacked the memory needed to run the program, which is used to edit and organize photos.
“Every time a computer crashes or something goes wrong, it impacts how much a student can accomplish in a day,” Natomas High photography teacher Cael Kuhlman said. “When the tool you’re supposed to use is a computer that doesn’t work, it really affects learning.”
