A new camera mounted at the intersection of Truxel and San Juan roads is catching the attention of Natomas-area drivers.

The Sacramento Police Department is hoping the new camera will also help nab criminals.

Police are now using fixed camera technology called Police Observation Devices or “PODS” at two major intersections – the one located in south Natomas and another in South Sacramento.

According to police, mobile cameras have proven to be a crime deterrent and effective in crime prevention and suspect apprehension. Mobile cameras have been stationed near the troubled four corners intersection of Truxel and San Juan roads as well as other spots in Natomas.

Police said the primary goal of PODS is to serve as a highly-visible crime deterrent. The devices are clearly marked with a police logo and a flashing blue light to maximize its effect as a crime prevention tool. If a crime occurs recorded video can also be reviewed for potential evidence.

PODS are equipped with license plate reading ability. This technology is able to quickly scan license plates and alert officers that a vehicle associated with a missing person or criminal activity is in the area. The cameras have already proven successful, police said.

Earlier this month on Sept. 15, one week after the PODS were mounted, police received an alert of a stolen vehicle being driven through the intersection of San Juan and Truxel roads. Officers rushed to the area and recovered the stolen car (pictured) and arrested the driver.

Police said they have taken measures to exclude private residences from being recorded that are not under investigation.
