Natomas Unified School District campuses today participated in safety drills – including a flood evacuation scenario – as part of the annual statewide Great California ShakeOut earthquake preparedness campaign.
All district schools planned to participate in the morning earthquake drill which was set to start at about 10:16 a.m., according to spokesman Jim Sanders.
As part of the earthquake drill, the district also practiced a scenario wherein an earthquake causes a levee breach, and students must be evacuated due to flooding, Sanders said.
Some students and staff from four district schools were transported by school bus to the Sleep Train Arena parking lot today as part of the exercise. Volunteer parents drove to the Sleep Train Arena parking lot to be reunited with their students.
The first ShakeOut drill, known as The Great Southern California ShakeOut, took place on Nov. 13, 2008. It was as the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history up until that time, and involved 5.3 million participants.
