Jeff Harris will be the new District 3 representative on the Sacramento City Council, according to unofficial election results posted Tuesday night.
Harris’ strong lead held throughout the night fetching 4,467 votes – or more than 56 percent of the electorate – with 58 out of 59 precincts reporting.
Opponent Cyril Shah remained in second place throughout the night. He had 3,365 votes – or nearly 43 percent – leading up to midnight.

Jeff Harris tonight appears to have won the District Three seat on the Sacramento City Council.
Harris continued to hold the lead at 3,420 votes – more than 56 percent of the votes cast within the district’s boundaries – with 49 out of 59 precincts reporting.
Candidate Cyril Shah trailed with 2,598 votes.
District Three reaches from Interstate 80 south, east of Interstate 5 and along the East Levee Canal, encompassing Gardenland/Northgate corridor and most South Natomas neighborhoods.
Harris will replace Councilman Steve Cohn who was first elected to the City Council in 1994 and re-elected to a record fifth term in June 2010. Cohn decided to run for state Assembly, a race he appeared to be losing Tuesday night to opponent Kevin McCarty.

Early election returns Tuesday night showed Jeff Harris leading the race for the District Three seat on the Sacramento City Council.
Harris held the lead with at 1,791 votes – or 56.45 percent – with 35 precincts out of 59 precincts reporting.
Harris is a general contractor who owns a home in River Park and resided in District 3 for 26 years.
Candidate Cyril Shah currently stands in second place with 1,373 votes or 43.27 percent.
Harris and Shah were the top two vote getters in the seven-way election held in June and faced each other in today’s runoff election.
