The Natomas Unified School District will jump start its free children’s summer meal program with two special events this month.
A California Thursdays-themed menu will be featured from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both June 11 at American Lakes Elementary School and on June 18 at Natomas Park Elementary School. Events will include a farmers’ market, barbecue and live music.
The special events mark the fourth year the district has provided the federally-funded Seamless Summer Feeding Program in Natomas, according to Vince Caguin, the district’s coordinator of nutrition services.
The program will serve free meals to children 18 years-old and younger at the two events as well as at area schools weekdays through July 31. No paperwork is required to receive the free meals.
The program began June 1 this year. Summer serving times vary by location:
• Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. at American Lakes, Leroy Greene Academy, Natomas Middle School, Inderkum High School, Natomas High School/Natomas Gateway and Natomas Park Elementary schools.
• Lunch at American Lakes from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Bannon Creek and Jefferson Elementary schools.
• Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Leroy Greene Academy and Witter Ranch schools.
• Natomas Middle School, Inderkum High School, Natomas High School/Natomas Gateway and Natomas Park Elementary schools will serve lunch from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Free meals are also available this year at South Natomas Library Tuesday through Friday from 12 p.m.to 12:30 p.m., Caguin said. Meals will also be provided at the Atrium Court Apartments in Natomas.
Adults will have to provide their own food during the kickoff events.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture established the Seamless Summer Feeding Program to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals, that meet federal nutrition guidelines, are served at approved sites in areas with significant concentrations of low-income children.
