Today marks the grand opening of Natomas’ first Little Free Library.
“We first saw one while visiting my sister in Portland years ago,” said Ron Dwyer-Voss who hosts the library with his wife, Sue. “(We) decided the kids that walk past our house everyday on their way to Jefferson should have one.”
The brightly-painted Free Little Library is located in front of 1980 Pebblewood Drive, near Jefferson Elementary School, in Natomas.
A grand opening has been set for 6:30 p.m. today, June 15 and donated books are welcome.
“We are super excited,” Dwyer-Voss said. “Books are already moving!”
Little Free Libraries are hand-crafted structures located in a public space where people can borrow and donate books. The Libraries contain constantly changing collections shared by people of all ages and backgrounds.
Most Libraries are placed in front yards, parks, gardens and easily accessible locations. They are built to withstand weather of all kinds and can hold 20 to 100 books.
“While these types of libraries exist worldwide, this will be the first in Natomas,” said Ron and Sue Dwyer-Voss in an e-mail message to friends announcing their new venture. “We are hoping for some fun community exchanges of books and conversations over the months and years to come.”
As of January 2015, there are over 25,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and more than 70 countries.
