THE NATOMAS BUZZ | @natomasbuzz
Plans for a new Sonic Drive-In eatery in Natomas have been approved.
According to public records, the project slated for a vacant lot on the 3800 block of Northgate Boulevard was approved last week by city planning staff.
The project was routed to several neighborhood and community organizations in the area, including the Gardenland Northgate Neighborhood Association, Natomas Community Association, South Natomas Improvement Association and South Natomas United. The city reported receiving comments from the Gardenland Northgate Neighborhood Association, WalkSacramento, and individual citizens.
As planned, vehicular access to Sonic will be via the yet-to-be-built Clyde Way on the west side of the site. There will be two separate driveways with one for incoming vehicles and one for those exiting.
A total of 23 on-site parking stalls are planned for the eatery, including eight drive-in stalls at the north side of the site which allow patrons to park and order at each stall. Bicycle parking spaces will also be provided.
According to city staff, there were concerns about the proposed use of the site, possible traffic impacts, pedestrian access, and bicycle parking. City staff found the proposed drive-thru restaurant use is allowed in the Highway Commercial zone, reviewed and supported the proposed site design with conditions of approval, and found the project provides both pedestrian access and bicycle parking.
The project site is adjacent to the eastbound Interstate 80 off ramp and next door to a planned KFC drive-thru restaurant approved by the city in October 2020.
Sonic Corp., more commonly known as Sonic, is the operator of an American drive-in fast-food restaurant chain that is owned by Inspire Brands, the parent company of Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.
