Students from three north-area high school will be among those competing today in the 9th annual Poetry Out Loud contest.
Before a live audience and a panel of judges, 13 of Sacramento County’s top teenage poetry performers will represent their high schools in a daylong, countywide competition being staged Feb. 6 at Rosemont High School. Jeff Knorr, Sacramento’s Poet Laureate, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Students Safa Qaomi from Inderkum High School, Taylor Tuers from Rio Linda High School and Diana Kvach from Natomas Charter School will be among those participating in the competition. Participating high schools also include Capital Christian, Center, Del Campo, Elk Grove, Heritage Peak Charter, John F. Kennedy, Luther Burbank, Monterey Trail, Pleasan Grove and Rio Americano.
The Sacramento County Poetry Out Loud competition encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The program provides students with the opportunity to perform poetry in English classes, encouraging youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.
Today’s winner will advance to the California Poetry Out Loud competition held next month in Sacramento. Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington to compete for the national championship in April.
Sacramento County’s Poetry Out Loud program is supported by the Sacramento County Office of Education, California Poets in the Schools, and the Poetry Foundation and is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
