The Niños Community Garden is currently underutilized, but Vice Mayor Jeff Harris has a plan to change that.
The community garden is located at Niños Parkway and Northfield Drive in Natomas. It was built in 2016 after liability rules dictated plots located in an adjacent community garden had to be cleared from under transmission towers which cross the city-owned property.
“It is the best community garden in the city,” said Harris, during a Gardenland Northgate Neighborhood Association meeting earlier this month.
The Niño Community Garden has 36 garden plots plus four ADA plots. Currently, there are a handful of plots available to lease — perfect for either the beginning or experienced gardener.
There is a one-time $25 registration fee and $50 annual fee to lease city-run garden plots.
“We understand that financial reasons can oftentimes be a barrier for some to take advantage of this wonderful amenity,” said Jocelyn Navarro, Harris’ Constituent Issues representative for District 3. “Which is why Vice Mayor Harris is offering to cover the registration and annual fees for the first year.”
To participate in Harrs’ garden subsidy program, gardeners must:
- Reside within District 3 (map)
- Attend an orientation
- Complete a waiver at the time of orientation
- Pay half of the second annual fee upfront at the time of registration, a total of $25
- Commit to leasing a plot for 2 years
