The Grant Union High School Pacers are now the No.1 football team in the state!
Sacramento’s prep powerhouse suited up Saturday for the third annual California Interscholastic Federation Championship Bowl Games at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
The Pacers, the first school from Sacramento selected to play in the State Bowl Games, played AND BEAT the previously top-ranked team in the state, Long Beach Poly. The final score was 25-20.
“Of all the things we’ve done here, all the things we are proud of, this is the pinnacle for us,” said Grant coach Mike Alberghini prior to the game. “It’s great for the school, the kids, the coaches, and the community that has followed us faithfully for all those years. It’s a reward for all of us.”
Alberghini has an impressive record at Grant-18 playoffs in 18 years, 15 league titles, six section titles, two 13-0 teams in the last three years and a 191-32-1 record. The Pacers, the Division II Champion in the Sac-Joaquin Section, are ranked No. 6 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.
