Leak Shuts Down Water Supply At Inderkum

A water main leak at Inderkum High School left the campus dry for most of the school day today, Sept. 4.

At about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, school maintenance crews reported a large leak from the school’s water main, according to a telephone ConnectEd message from Principal George Tapanes.

By 10 a.m., Natomas Unified School District maintenance and operations workers determined all water services to the school would need to be turned off in order for repairs to be made. School district officials decided to keep the campus open and provide alternative water and restroom services to students, teachers and other school workers.

“Releasing 1,500 students early, without advanced parental notification, would have risked the possible safety and security of our students,” Tapanes said in his message to parents.

Restrooms were made available to students at the adjacent American River College campus and the North Natomas Library. The school district also provided sevedral portable bathrooms and supplied bottled water for students and Inderkum staff.

Water service was restored by 2 p.m. in all parts of the high school except C wing which makes up 15 percent to 20 percent of the campus. According to Tapanes, maintenance crews were scheduled to work through the night to restore water services in time for school on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

“I would like to thank our students and staff, as well as the district’s maintenance and operations department for their handling of this event,” Tapanes said. “Due to everyone’s response and working together, our school was able to operate smoothly this morning.”
