Recently the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced it will issue new flood insurance rate maps for the Natomas Basin.
City of Sacramento officials expect the new rate maps to become effective by the end of this year.
After the new maps become effective, flood insurance will become mandatory for residents with federally-backed mortgages and all residents will be required to purchase a standard flood insurance policy. Homes permitted before September 15, 1978 will qualify to purchase a Standard X policy.
Under these policies, residents have the option to purchase insurance to cover just the structure of their home or the structure and the contents.
