Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby, Natomas Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Marshall and Natomas Unified school board member Ryan Herche were on hand for the Sacramento Academy of Martial Arts grand-opening and ribbon-cutting event held Saturday, Feb. 9.

Sacramento Academy of Martial Arts owner Emil C. Valdés said he was inspired at a town hall meeting hosted by Ashby in November to reopen his small business. He had been a small business owner in San Francisco prior to moving to Natomas in 2006.

“I love this community but like so many small business owners, I have been reluctant to invest and establish my small business in Natomas with the uncertainty of the future of our country’s economy,” Valdés wrote to Ashby, inviting her to the festivities. “With you at the helm of this community, I am confident we cannot go wrong.”

Valdés’ new dojo specializes in Shotokan Karate – a traditional Japanese martial art which emphasizes balance and muscle control.

The Sacramento Academy of Martial Arts is located in the Natomas Village Center at 3880 Truxel Road, Suite 100, near Chili’s. Weekly classes are also held at The Club at Natomas Park.
