Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep High School has been recognized as one of the top high schools in California for its law-themed civics programs.
NP3 ranked in the top 8 of only 22 high schools in the state to receive recognition from California Supreme Court Chief Justice, Tani Cantil-Sakauye and State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, according to a press release from the school.
Prompted by the passion of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (ret), California’s judicial and educational leadership together initiated a Civic Learning Award program to both celebrate successful efforts to engage students in civic learning and to identify successful models that can be replicated in other schools. Each of California’s 1,289 public high schools was invited to apply.
NP3’s rank of “Distinction” not only results in a plaque for the school, but also earns the campus a special site visit by an appellate court justice. Five NP3 students along with Principal Tom Rutten were guests at a reception last month sponsored by the Sacramento County Bar Association showcasing high school civic education and featuring Justice O’Connor.
Rutten said he credits the award and recognition to the collaboration between NP3 staff, students and community and ongoing support from Education Pipeline partners University of the Pacific, Pacific McGeorge School of Law, Downey Brand LLP and Keith Staten & Associates.
