Natomas resident Peter Mibach won first place for the second year in a row at the Pioneer District Pinewood Derby held March 10.
Mibach’s entry – “the pencil” – won with a time of 2.49 seconds, beating out 29 other competitors at the district derby event, sponsored this year by Mel Rapton Honda.
The Pioneer District is one of 15 districts within the Golden Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America. The district includes Antelope, Foothill Farms, Rio Linda, Robla, North Sacramento, Del Paso Heights, and Natomas.
Top three finishers from each Cub Scout pack were invited to compete at the district-level derby race.
Pinewood derby races are an annual tradition for Cub Scouts. Mibach has been a Cub Scout in Natomas Pack No. 402 for five years and recently bridged to Boy Scout Troop No. 447, making the district win his last race.
Mibach’s derby dad, Matt, was thrilled with the second win, had some secrets to share with Cub Scout families.
“Ask your son if he wants to go for a fast car or a cool looking car, that way there isn’t miscommunication if you’re helping your son,” he said.
The younger Mibach said he will miss being in Cub Scouts and racing in the derby, but had words of encouragement for those still racing.
“Have fun and put your weights inside the car,” he said.
