The Natomas Unified School board on Wednesday, Dec. 14 recognized the Natomas High School Nighthawks boys soccer team which won the CIF/Sac Joaquin Section Championship last month.
After a difficult beginning to the season, the Nighthawks improved their game, moved into third place in the Tri-County Conference and advanced to the section playoffs.
“It started with a victory at Foothill High on a cold, drizzly night,” said Natomas High principal John Eick. “Then came a stunning upset by penalty kicks, over the state’s eighth ranked team, the Vallejo Apaches.”
Natomas beat Rio Americano and moved on to the section championship game against another, much higher-ranked team, the Placer Hillmen.
The Nighthawks played tough defense down the stretch and with a close call in stoppage time, held on to defeat the Hillmen and win back-to-back section titles for the first time in Natomas’ soccer history.
Head Coach Geo Villalobos, Assistant Coach Armando Villalobos, Assistant Coach Bryan Villalobos, and Team Captains Freddy Gaona, Luis Romo, and Erick Vega.
Team members Trevon Andrews, Carlos Cuevas, Jorge Flores, George Garcia, Irvin Garcia, Julian Garcia, Cristian Gomez, Jason Gutierrez, Brandon Lopez, Juan Mendoza, Jose Mendoza, Chris Nuno, Adrian Revelez, Mario Robles-Vega, Ismael Ruiz, Antonio Victor and Jose Villa.
