Fourth-grade students in the GATE program at Witter Ranch Elementary School won big last month at the Sac Math competition.
More than 80 students in third, fourth and fifth grades registered for the contest from 18 schools in the greater Sacramento area. Students took four challenging test events involving various mathematical questions and styles of problem-solving.
For Number Sense, Calculator, Individual Math, and Maps/Graphs/Charts, awards were given to the top three places in third grade and the top 10 places in fourth and fifth grade. Awards also given to the top math teams based on average Individual Math score of the team members plus the team’s score on the Team Math test.
Witter Ranch students accounted for several top 10 finishes with one student placing second overall and the school placing third overall in the regional competition.
The Natomas Unified school board last week recognized the students – Alec Finn, Anusha Chaudhary, James McDole, Shivam Patel, Camille Zhang, Bella Nguyen and Shreya Chadhary – during a regular board meeting held on Nov. 9.
