Inderkum High School’s National Honor Society hosted the first installment of their Speaker Series on Friday, Nov. 4, in an effort to expose students to various professional careers.
A group of nearly 40 students gathered in the Community Room of the North Natomas Library to hear the first speaker, Jarmil Maupin, give information on his career as a sound designer and virtual mixer. Maupin, father of Inderkum senior and club vice-president Pamela Maupin, earned a degree in electronic engineering from Devry Institute of Technology in Phoenix, Ariz.
After working in the aerospace industry for 15 years, Maupin changed his course to focus on sound work for movies and TV programs.
“I wanted to do something different, something more creative,” he said.
Maupin’s sudden change of interest may not be as drastic as it seems, as his childhood was filled with musical inspirations from his father’s line of work.
“My passion is painting sound to picture,” Maupin said. “If you can imagine it, I can create it.”
The Speaker Series gave him a change to inspire young minds in the Natomas community.
The Honor Society was pleased with the success of the event and future speakers are being planned for later in the school year. Kristi Dills, club advisor and English teacher, came up with the idea of a Speaker Series as an event for the Honor Society to sponsor.
“I sought to create an experience where Inderkum students might receive career information in a professional, lecture format,” said Dills, who hopes the talks will inspire students to pursue their own passions.
