ROSEVILLE – Natomas swimmer Frankie Colby etched herself into the record books Sunday afternoon at the Sacramento Valley Meet of Champions.
Colby broke a three-year meet record with a time of 13.94 in the girls 9- to 10-year-old 25-yard butterfly at the Roseville Aquatic Center in front of 1,500 spectators.
Colby’s time on August 4 bested Jordyn Sloan of Johnson Ranch Barracudas 13.95 record set in 2010, by .01 a second.
“It feels really cool,” said Colby, soon-to-be a 6th grader at Natomas Charter School’s Performing and Fine Arts Academy. “I’ve never gotten into the 13 (seconds) before in a butterfly race. I told myself I needed to win this because I really wanted to win it.”
Colby’s victory is the first in the 13-year history of the Meet of Champions for the Natomas Racquet Club, according to team coach Randy Burton.
“It’s a great accomplishment for her and for the program,” Burton said.
Colby doesn’t just excel in the pool. The 11-year-old is also active in gymnastics and acting — one of the reasons she’s plans to attend PFAA. She previously went to Two Rivers Elementary School.
“She is well-rounded and has a lot of interests,” Burton said. “I just hope she continues to concentrate on swimming because she has great potential.”
Colby says that having her name in the meet record books will be a great thing to see.
“It’s so much fun to swim. And I’m good at it,” she said. “It’s fun to do something that you are good at and it’s cool to see your name on a program, too.”
