Natomas is home to Joseph Morales, a 16-year-old senior at Inderkum High School, who will represent Team USA at the World Pankration Championship in Tamasi, Hungary this fall.
Pankration is an ancient Greek sport which combines boxing and wrestling. It is the forefather of modern mixed martial arts and one of the original Olympic sports in ancient Greece. Morales is a three-time Californian and three-time national champion in the sport.
In addition to Pankration, Morales holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and trains Muay Thai Kickboxing. When he graduates from Inderkum, Morales plans to attend Sierra College to wrestle and major in Kinesiology. He hopes to fight professionally after college.
Morales and his family are raising money for the trip to the World Championships by holding a fundraiser 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 1. at El Pollo Loco, 3500 Northgate Blvd. Proceeds will help cover the $1,600 cost of travel to Hungary for the competition.
Tax-deductible donations can also be made by sending a check payable to “Fighting for Fitness” to 2701 Del Paso Road #130-68, Sacramento, 95835 or online at the Fighting for Fitness website.
